Billionaires 2013: Notable Newcomers Tory Burch, Nicholas Woodman, Renzo Rosso
Tory Burch, whose $200 ballet flats and preppy women’s wear brand have launched her–as well as ex-husband Chris Burch–to billionaire status. Burch, 46, is the second youngest self-made female billionaire in America, after Spanx inventor Sara Blakely, 42. In December, former company co-chair Chris Burch sold part of his 28.3% stake in Tory Burch LLC, valuing the entire company at well over $3 billion.
Also of note this year is GoPro’s 37-year-old Nicholas Woodman, who turned his passion for capturing outdoor adventures into a $2.25 billion company. Pro surfer Kelly Slater–as well as a slew of amateur sports enthusiasts–uses GoPro’s HD video camera to capture his adventures.
And then there’s Renzo Rosso, the 57-year-old founder of Diesel jeans. Rosso co-founded Diesel when he was 23, and has spent the last ten years acquiring stakes in European fashion houses: Paris-based Maison Martin Margiela, Amsterdam’s Viktor & Rolf, and this past December, Milanese label Marni. He also owns The Pelican, a trendy arty hotel in South Beach, and a winery in northern Italy near his home. He’s also invested in tech startups like Nonabox, a Birchbox for pregnant women. Renzo’s Rosso’s fashion empire had revenues of $2 billion in 2012.
